Sea Cucumber Peptide

Sea cucumber contains more than 50 natural nutrients. Sea cucumber peptide is a small molecule peptide, it is extracted from fresh or dried sea cucumber by advanced enzyme hydrolysis technology. This technology is preferred in food industry to produce bioactive peptides, facilitates the release of polysaccharides varying in molecular weight (MW) and chemical structure in commercial sea cucumber species, increasing the viscosity of sea cucumber hydrolysate.

Effects of sea cucumber peptide

By advanced enzyme hydrolysis technology, sea cucumber large proteins molecules can be transformed into small molecule peptides which are more easily absorbed and have stronger function such as anti-aging, anti-fatigue, anti-tumor effect, etc. The details are as follows:

  • Anti-aging effect

Aging refers to a multidimensional process of mainly physical and psychological changes causing increased risks for neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, and it is widely accepted that oxidative stress is the key mediator in the normal process of aging and neurodegenerative disease.

Lianzhu Lin[1] et al. prepared a high-value anti-aging oligopeptide (S. variegates peptide) from sea cucumber. In vivo studies demonstrated that S. variegates peptide effectively promoted longevity in normal and D-galactose-induced aging fruit flies and attenuated D-galactose-induced oxidative injury in mice via up-regulating Klotho expression, activating superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and inhibiting lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation. And the results also validated the stability of longevity promoting efficacy and anti-oxidative stress action of S. variegates peptide after citric acid-heat treatment.

  • Anti-fatigue effect

Fatigue is often set in the certain peak of mental or physical status required to sustain a given task, indicating a temporary decrease in work performance and a sign of several illnesses.

It has been reported that sea cucumber peptides increase antifatigue property by elevating mitochondrial quality. Meanwhile, the maintenance of energy homeostasis is beneficial for reducing the accumulation of metabolites[2].

  • Anti-cancer effect

Cancer is a disease in which some of the body's cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body.

It has been reported that small molecular oligopeptide (<1000 Dal.), extracted from sea cucumber intestines hydrolyzed by alkaline protease, inhibits the growth of MCF-7 (breast cancer) tumor cells in zebrafish and increases the apoptosis of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. Further mechanism studies confirm that sea cucumber intestinal peptide promotes the expression of apoptosis-related proteins and thus promotes the MCF-7 apoptosis via inhibition of PI3K/AKT signal transduction pathway[3].
