Description
Propylene is a colorless gas with a faint petroleum like odor. It is shipped as a liquefied gas under its own vapor pressure. For transportation it may be stenched. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite. It is easily ignited. The vapors are heavier than air. Any leak can either be liquid or vapor. It can asphyxiate by the displacement of air. Under prolonged exposure to fire or intense heat the containers may rupture violently and rocket. It is used to make other chemicals. Application
Polypropylene serves as a versatile low-density resin that provides a balanced combination of thermal, chemical, and electrical properties, along with moderate strength. Its strength can be significantly enhanced with the addition of reinforcing agents such as glass fiber. Despite its limited heat resistance, polypropylene is suitable for applications that require exposure to boiling water or steam sterilization. It is resistant to chemical attacks from aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and mineral acids and bases, even at high temperatures, and remains unaffected by most organic substances at room temperature. However, it is vulnerable to halogens, fuming nitric acid, other active oxidizing agents, and aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons at elevated temperatures. The resin is translucent and autoclavable, and its properties can be refined by incorporating fillers, blending with synthetic elastomers, or copolymerizing with small amounts of other monomers. Polypropylene also serves as a modifier for waxes to reduce blocking, scuffing, and abrasion, and enhances pigment dispersion in films and fibers. It is uniquely similar to polyethylene in structure, yet can be formed into thinner films, making it an ideal material for applications such as impregnated capacitors where reduced electrical loss is advantageous.
