The research assessed how refined oriental lacquers (RL) performance improved with various hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) at a concentration of 2 phr while monitoring their influence on coating and film properties.
Sample Preparation:
The following HALS compounds were used:
· H95: Bis(1-octyloxy-2,2,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate (Mw 737 g/mol, pH 5.3)
· H60: Bis(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl)-[[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]methyl] butylmalonate (Mw 685 g/mol, pH 7.1)
· H90: Bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl) sebacate (Mw 480 g/mol, pH 9.1)
· H93: Mixture of methyl 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidyl sebacate and bis(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl) sebacate (1:3 mole ratio, Mw 404 g/mol, pH 9.1)
The HALS samples dissolved in ultrasonic dispersion were mixed with 10 mL of xylene. The solution mixed with RL material followed by stirring for 10 minutes.
Key Findings:
The addition of 2 parts per hundred resin (phr) of H90 containing -NH or H60 containing -NCH3 led to substantial improvements in RL film lightfastness. The introduction of HALS to RL resulted in a pH increase which boosted the activity of laccase-catalyzed reactions. The concurrent action of HALS radical scavenging function blocked the oxidative polymerization of RL side chains. The modifications affected both the duration of curing alongside the film characteristics. The HALS H90 demonstrated superior lightfastness while maintaining RL's properties and reducing drying time when tested at 2 phr levels proving to be the best additive choice.
