Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are critical for meeting rising energy density demands but face significant barriers due to lithium metal anode (LMA) instability. This case study focused on optimizing electrolytes using Tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) orthoformate (TFEO) as a diluent in high-concentration electrolytes (HCEs) to form localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs). The core objectives were understanding TFEO's stabilizing mechanisms and identifying optimal formulations.
Key Mechanism: Interphase Stabilization
TFEO-based LHCEs promote robust solid electrolyte interphases (SEI) on LMAs and cathode electrolyte interphases (CEI) on NMC811, suppressing continuous side reactions, minimizing cathode lattice reconstruction (layered to rock salt), and inhibiting SEI growth.
Performance Under Practical Conditions
Optimized formulations LiFSI-1.2DME-2TFEO and LiFSI-1.3DME-2TFEO enabled Li||NMC811 cells with high cathode loading (4.2 mAh cm-2), thin Li (50 µm), and lean electrolyte (3 g(Ah)-1) to retain >80% capacity over 200 cycles.
Critical Design Principle
Electrolyte optimization is sensitive to electrolyte quantity due to salt consumption; sufficient salt concentration is vital for SEI formation under lean conditions. While cathode stability dominates under flooded conditions, balanced CEI and salt-derived SEI determine lean-electrolyte performance.

This case study examined the electric double layer (EDL) structures in localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) containing tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) orthoformate (TFEO), addressing a critical knowledge gap in understanding how EDL heterogeneity impacts solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation in lithium batteries. The research focused on a prototypical LHCE formulation: LiFSI-1.2DME-2TFEO, where TFEO functions as a diluent.
Key Findings
· Heterogeneous EDL Structure: Structure of EDLs in LHCEs turned out to be heterogeneous, which can be represented by the micelle-like models with a distinct salt-solvent-rich and diluent regions (Li+-rich and Li+-poor). This was because TFEO cannot form a complete solvation shell in the bulk electrolyte due to steric effects; however, only a partial solvation shell was required near the surface.
· Mechanism Impacting SEI Formation: The heterogeneous EDL structure critically affects SEI formation through two mechanisms: 1) Li+ ions appear in the diluent region to enable charge screening despite TFEO's non-coordination in bulk electrolyte, and 2) Li+ association near the electrode surface increases TFEO's reduction voltage, directly influencing SEI composition and properties.
· Experimental Insight: Comparisons with low-concentration (LiFSI-9DME) and high-concentration (LiFSI-1.4DME, LiFSI-1.2DME) electrolytes confirm the structural uniqueness of TFEO-based LHCEs. While conventional electrolytes show homogeneous EDL distributions, the TFEO-containing system maintains its micelle-like organization at the electrode interface.
