Triphenylgermanium hydride (Ph₃GeH) was evaluated as a key component of a novel amine-free photoinitiating system (PIS) for the polymerization of dental methacrylate resins. Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (70/30 w/w) and UDMA resins were exposed to a 477 nm dental blue LED in thin (20 μm) and thick (1.4 mm) formats. Photopolymerization kinetics were monitored by FTIR and DSC, while ESR spectroscopy and steady-state photolysis confirmed germyl radical formation. The Ph₃GeH-based PIS exhibited superior polymerization efficiency and bleaching compared to conventional CQ/amine systems, with a direct correlation between Ph₃GeH content and color stability. Mechanistic insights clarified the excited-state processes driving radical initiation, highlighting the experimental potential of Ph₃GeH in high-performance dental formulations.
