Sodium octacosanoate (NaC28-32) was evaluated as a nucleating additive (0.50 wt%) in three chemically identical thermoplastic polyurethanes that differed only by molecular weight.
Materials & Processing: Sodium octacosanoate was incorporated into TPU at 0.50 wt%. The mixture was pre-mixed by hot pressing at 100 °C for 5 min, followed by pressing at room temperature for 15 s under 5 kgf cm-2. The sheets were cut and homogenized in a mixer at 90 °C and 70 rpm for 10 min, then hot-pressed again at 100 °C for 5 min and 50 kgf cm-2 to obtain uniform TPU/NaC28-32 samples for crystallization studies.
· Enhanced Crystallization Kinetics: The incorporation of sodium octacosanoate significantly accelerated the crystallization process across all TPU samples. Both kinetic models confirmed faster crystallization rates and increased crystallization temperatures compared to neat TPU systems.
· Nucleation Mechanism: The accelerated crystallization was attributed to the formation of a greater number of crystallization nuclei in the presence of sodium octacosanoate. This nucleating effect was most pronounced in the lowest molecular weight TPU, suggesting molecular weight dependency in the nucleation efficiency.
· Crystallization Geometry: Analysis through the Avrami and Avrami-Ozawa models indicated that the TPU crystallization process proceeded through the development of two-dimensional lamellar aggregates (axialites). The addition of sodium octacosanoate did not alter this fundamental crystallization geometry but enhanced the nucleation density within this framework.
