Environmentally-Relevant Ecotoxicity Study of 1-Hydroxycyclohexyl Phenyl Ketone in Freshwaters

Overview of the biotoxicity of 1-HCHPK plastic additive. Blinova, Irina, et al. Water 15.18 (2023): 3213.

1-Hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (1-HCHPK) is a Type I Norish photoinitiator. It is characterized by high initiation efficiency, excellent thermal stability and excellent yellowing resistance. 1-HCHPK is a common photoinitiator in the UV-curable field, used in printing, coatings, 3D printing, packaging, and industrial production. To facilitate the sustainable use of 1-HCHPK, the present study assessed its acute and chronic toxicity to freshwater microcrustaceans under environmentally relevant conditions.
Water quality from natural water systems was used to mimic the exposure conditions. Acute toxicity was determined using pelagic species (Thamnocephalus platyurus and Daphnia magna) and benthic species (Heterocypris incongruens). Low-concentration long-term toxicity was assessed using Daphnia magna in lake water, with exposure concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L over three generations. Mortality, hatching and fitness of the organism were the three end points of the experiments.
Key Findings
· Acute toxicity: The LC50 values of 1-HCHPK were 27-55 mg/L, with low acute toxicity for all microcrustacean species tested.
· Chronic toxicity: No toxic effects were detected in the three-generation test of Daphnia magna at a concentration of 1.0 mg/L. Hatching and fitness of the organisms were not affected.
· This study confirmed that 1-HCHPK had no hazard to aquatic crustaceans at concentrations ≤ 1 mg/L in natural waters.

Enhancing UV-Curing Performance and Safety Using 1-Hydroxycyclohexyl Phenyl Ketone in Novel Macro-Photoinitiators

Chemical reactions for the synthesis of four new macromolecular photoinitiators based on 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone. Deng, Lin, et al. Progress in Organic Coatings 141 (2020): 105546.

1-Hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (1-HCHPK), also known as Irgacure 184, is a commercially available Type I photoinitiator that is broadly used in UV-induced polymerizations due to its high efficiency. In this work, it was reported that this photoinitiator was used as a functional building block in the preparation of new macro-photoinitiators to provide low migration issues while exhibiting good curing performance and compatibility in UV-curable coatings.
A series of four innovative macro-photoinitiators (PI1-PI4) were synthesized using 1-HCHPK as a key functional building block. By copolymerizing it with isocyanates, HEMA, and PETA, high-molecular-weight photoinitiators were created that combine low migration with high reactivity and thermal stability.
Synthesis Process
The macro-photoinitiators were synthesized via a multi-step reaction: 1) 1-HCHPK was reacted with an HDI trimer (polyisocyanate) at 60°C under catalytic conditions. 2) PETA (pentaerythritol triacrylate) was introduced to extend functionality and molecular weight. 3) The reaction was monitored via NCO% content until theoretical values were achieved. 4) The product was purified using petroleum ether, washed, dried, and isolated as a viscous liquid.
Key Performance Results
The macro-photoinitiators significantly reduced migration compared to unmodified 1-HCHPK. Real-time FTIR confirmed rapid photopolymerization kinetics and high conversion rates. The products exhibited T10% (10% weight loss temperature) above 299.7°C. Excellent integration with oligomers and reactive diluents like TPGDA was observed. UV-cured films demonstrated outstanding mechanical and surface properties.
