Dipentene was experimentally applied as a reactive modifier to improve the performance of sulfur-modified asphalt systems. In this study, dried elemental sulfur was first combined with a smoke suppressant agent (zinc stearate/zinc hydroxystannate, 1:1 w/w, 0.1 wt% of sulfur) at room temperature. Dipentene was then introduced into the sulfur matrix, and the mixture was heated to 170 °C under oil-bath conditions and sheared at 500 rpm for 1 h to promote molecular interaction between sulfur chains and dipentene, yielding dipentene-modified sulfur (DPS). Subsequently, ethylhexyl acrylate was added, and the system was maintained at 170 °C with continuous stirring for an additional 2 h to ensure homogeneous dispersion and further stabilization of the sulfur network. The resulting modified sulfur was cooled to room temperature and incorporated into asphalt binders. The dipentene-modified sulfur significantly enhanced moisture resistance and low-temperature crack resistance while maintaining satisfactory high-temperature and fatigue performance, demonstrating dipentene's effectiveness as a sulfur modification agent in asphalt applications.
