Experimental Protocol: A ball-on-disk friction tester in a high-vacuum chamber (base pressure <2×10^-4 Pa) was used with bearing steel 52100 specimens. The trapped hydrogen desorption amount was reduced. XPS revealed FeS formation (S 2p at 162.1 eV, Fe 2p3/2 at 712.5 eV). ToF-SIMS detected FeS- (m/z 87.91) inside the wear scar but not outside, with sulfide present up to 500 nm depth. The ratio of trapped hydrogen (additive-free vs. with additive) was independent of sliding velocity but increased with load.
