1,3-Benzenedisulfonyl fluoride forms a self-assembled monolayer on copper current collectors via thiol-Cu bonding. This electrochemically active monolayer (EAM) regulates the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) nanostructure and Li nucleation, enabling stable Li metal anodes at sub-zero temperatures.
Fabrication Process: Cleaned Cu foils or three-dimensional hosts were immersed in an ethanol solution of the thiol-terminated 1,3-benzenedisulfonyl fluoride derivative for 6 h under nitrogen, then rinsed and dried. The modified Cu (EAM Cu) was used directly as the anode current collector.
Performance Evaluation: At -15 °C, EAM Cu induced uniform island-shaped Li deposition (bare Cu gave needle-like dendrites). Cryo-TEM revealed a multilayered SEI with a LiF-rich inner phase and amorphous outer layer, in contrast to the highly crystalline, Li2CO3-dominated SEI on bare Cu. XPS showed LiF content increased from 14.5% to 46.8% at -15 °C with EAM. Galvanic corrosion current dropped to <0.1 μA/cm². In Li|Cu cells at 6.0 mA/cm² and 6.0 mAh/cm² (-15 °C), average Coulombic efficiency reached 98.6% over 250 cycles. A Li|LiCoO2 cell (2.0 mAh/cm²) with 45 min recharge at -15 °C retained 87.7% capacity after 200 cycles.
Conclusion: 1,3-Benzenedisulfonyl fluoride monolayer enables a LiF-rich, passive SEI that suppresses dendrites and corrosion, allowing high-rate, low-temperature operation of Li metal batteries.
