Homolytic Adamantylation of Alkylsulfonylpyridines Including 2-(Methylsulfonyl)Pyridine

Rybakova, I. A., et al.Doklady Chemistry. 2005, 400, 3-6.

The research examined 2- and 4-alkylsulfonylpyridines functioning as heteroaromatic bases during 1-adamantyl radical reactions. The study utilized heteroaromatic bases including 2-methylsulfonylpyridine (VIIa) and 2-tert-butylsulfonylpyridine (VIIb). The experimental findings demonstrate that electron-withdrawing groups activate both the 2- and 4-positions in protonated pyridines.
The acid medium reaction of compounds VIIa and VIIb yields mixtures containing 4-(1-adamantyl)-2-alkylsulfonylpyridines (Xa, Xb), 5-(1-adamantyl)-2-alkylsulfonylpyridines (XIa, XIb), 6-(1-adamantyl)-2-alkylsulfonylpyridines (XIIa, XIIb), and 4,6-di(1-adamantyl)sulfonylpyridines (XIIIa, XIIIb).
Researchers analyzed the UV spectra of pyridine derivatives alongside the spectra from their protonated forms produced by adding an excess amount of HCl. Analyzing the UV spectra of pyridine and pyridine hydrochloride demonstrates how HCl causes electron density reallocation within the pyridine ring. The absorption band between 250-275 nm shows a shape transformation and doubles in intensity. UV spectral analysis shows that nonprotonated alkylsulfonylpyridines exhibit significant differences from pyridine but display greater similarity to the spectrum of pyridine hydrochloride. When HCl is added to either starting sulfones 2-methylsulfonylpyridine (VIIa) and VIIb or to product Xa, there is little impact on the spectral characteristics.
