Specification
Sodium silicate can react with calcium hydroxide in the hydrated cement slurry to form a calcium silicate hydrate gel that fills cracks. Strategies for autonomous self-healing of cementitious composites using embedded microcapsules have been proposed. As cracks propagate in the cement matrix, they rupture the dispersed capsules and release their contents (such as sodium silicate) into the crack volume. Studies have shown that the addition of 4% microencapsulated sodium silicate reduced the sorption of cracked specimens over a 28-day healing period.
Ingredients of sodium silicate microcapsules
· L500 microcapsules contain a liquid sodium silicate solution dispersed in mineral oil and emulsifiers. The amount of sodium silicate is approximately 42% of the total encapsulating material. L500 microcapsules are dispersed in a liquid solution and need to be extracted before being added to the cement mixture.
· T130 microcapsules use polyurea as the shell material and are manufactured using in-situ polymerization technology. T130 microcapsules are in powder form so they can be added directly to the cement mixture.
The molecular formula of sodium silicate is Na2SiO3.
Some synonyms for sodium silicate are Sodium metasilicate, Waterglass, and Sodium siliconate.
