Potential of Sodium Alpha-Olefin Sulfonate Surfactant for Enhanced Oil Recovery

The stability of foam generated from crude oil is considered an important factor in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, most surfactants precipitate due to the hardness of the formation water. Alpha-olefin sulfonates (AOS) are a group of anionic surfactants with high biodegradability and low toxicity. These surfactants also have excellent wetting, dispersing, emulsifying, foaming and stabilizing abilities. Research has found that Sodium C14-16 Olefin sulfonate (AOS C14-16) exhibits good foaming properties in crude oil.
Foaming properties of Sodium C14-16 Olefin sulfonate
· When the concentration of a single surfactant solution increases from 0.6% AOS C14-16 to 1.2% AOS C14-16, the stability of the foam produced without crude oil increases.
· Maximum time for 50% liquid drainage and foam decay in combined surfactant solutions with concentrations of 0.6%AOS C14-16 + 0.6%LMDO and 0.6%AOS C14-16 + 0.6%TX100.
· The surfactant solution with concentration of 0.6%AOS C14-16 and 1.2%AOS C14-16 with formation water and two types of crude oil showed the best resistance with maximum foam longevity.
