Sodium heptadecyl sulfate acts as an anionic surfactant that markedly enhances the sensitized terbium luminescence of the lorazepam complex, supporting a simple extraction-free analytical method for drug quantification in pharmaceutical tablets.
Experimental Protocol: A surfactant solution at 10-2 mol/L is prepared in water, and ternary complexes are formed by mixing terbium chloride at 10-3 mol/L, lorazepam working solution, surfactant at 1.5 x 10-4 mol/L and urothropine buffer at pH 6.5, diluted to 10 mL and measured after 5 min at emission 545 nm with excitation at 270 nm. All measurements are performed at room temperature between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius. Tablet powder equivalent to 5 mg of active ingredient is extracted in ethanol and analyzed identically.
Performance Evaluation: The ternary system with a 1:1:2 ratio of lorazepam, terbium and surfactant gives a linear calibration from 0.05 to 20.0 ug/mL with a limit of detection of 0.016 ug/mL and correlation coefficient 0.9985. Recovery ranges from 97.0% to 102.8% with an average accuracy of 99.1%, intra-day and inter-day precision of 2.8% and 3.9%, and a large Stokes shift of 275 nm, with no interference from common excipients.

Sodium heptadecyl sulfate functions as a surfactant additive in a photogalvanic cell containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as reductant and Azur B as photosensitizer, improving the solubilization of dye molecules and stabilizing the cell for solar energy conversion and storage.
Experimental Protocol: An H-shaped cell is filled with 25 mL of solution containing the surfactant at 7.20 x 10-3 mol/L, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid at 2.20 x 10-3 mol/L and Azur B at 4.00 x 10-5 mol/L at pH 12.60. A platinum electrode is immersed in the illuminated arm and a reference electrode in the dark arm, and the cell is irradiated with a tungsten lamp at 10.4 mW/cm2 while maintaining a temperature of 303 K. Current-voltage characteristics are recorded under variable external load.
Performance Evaluation: The system generates a photopotential of 778.0 mV and photocurrent of 45.0 uA, with maximum power of 35.01 uW, conversion efficiency of 0.14% and fill factor of 0.3169. The initial current generation rate reaches 20.0 uA/min and the cell operates for 40 min in the dark. Without the surfactant, the photopotential drops to 600 mV, efficiency to 0.06% and storage to 11 min.
