Eicosanoic acid has demonstrated significant potential in surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) when anchored onto citrate-protected confeito-like gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a CaF₂ substrate. The study revealed that the absorption bands of the alkyl chain in eicosanoic acid were enhanced approximately 200-fold compared to the control, indicating a strong plasmonic effect. The enhancement diminished upon removal of excess citrate from the AuNPs, confirming the role of citrate in anchoring eicosanoic acid and promoting molecular ordering. This improved molecular arrangement on citrate-coated AuNPs suggests that eicosanoic acid can serve as a model organic layer for SEIRAS-based ultrasensitive assays. The findings highlight the utility of eicosanoic acid in advancing plasmonic sensing technologies, providing a straightforward method for fabricating highly sensitive detection platforms.
