Conventional 2,4-D formulations (e.g., 2-ethylhexyl ester, dimethylammonium salt, and choline salt blends) are widely used but can be limited by suboptimal deposition patterns, limited cuticular penetration, and variable field efficacy. This study investigated a family of quaternary-ammonium 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate salts to assess whether tailored cations could improve the physicochemical behavior and weed-control performance of the 2,4-D herbicide. Among the designs tested, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)methyloleylammonium 2,4-D (abbreviated here as [Etq O][2,4-D]) emerged as a herbicidal ionic liquid (HIL) combining surfactant-like deposition characteristics with strong biological activity.
Key Results:
· Ionic liquids based on 2,4-D (including [Etq O][2,4-D]) showed similar or improved weed-control efficacy compared with commercial 2,4-D forms (2-ethylhexyl ester, dimethylammonium salt) and choline salts in greenhouse studies.
· In field experiments the HILs, including [Etq O][2,4-D], demonstrated substantially higher efficacy than choline salts and the common commercial 2,4-D formulations - reported in the study as several-fold improvements and, in aggregate statements, up to "4~8 times higher efficacy" compared to some commercial forms.
· Deposit patterns on leaf surfaces differed from those produced by commercial formulations. [Etq O][2,4-D] exhibited a coffee-ring type deposit pattern, which was associated with improved penetration of active ingredient into plant tissue.
