Antioxidant 24 (Bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) pentaerythritol diphosphite) is widely recognized as an effective processing stabilizer in polymer applications. However, a significant challenge associated with its use is its inherent susceptibility to hydrolysis, which can limit its performance and shelf-life. The work evaluated how blending Antioxidant 24 with common co-additives and changing its physical form can mitigate hydrolysis.
The formulation studied was binary and ternary blends of Antioxidant 24 (P-24) with other stabiliser additives commonly used in polymer processing - in this case a primary phenolic antioxidant (Anox 20), acid scavengers (calcium stearate, CaSt) and a hydrotalcite-like material (DHT-4A). The blends were studied in two different physical forms with respect to their hydrolytic stability: conventional free-flowing powder and consolidated Non-Dust Blend (NDB).
Key Findings:
· The hydrolytic stability of Antioxidant 24 was significantly improved when blended with acid scavengers. The hydrotalcite DHT-4A demonstrated the most pronounced positive effect. Its function is attributed to neutralizing the acidic species generated during the initial hydrolysis of the phosphite, thereby inhibiting the autocatalytic nature of the reaction.
· Impact of Physical Form: The NDB form of the blends provided superior hydrolytic stability compared to the powder form. This is attributed to a diffusion-controlled process, where the consolidated pellet structure slows down the penetration of moisture to the active ingredient.
· Spectroscopic studies confirmed the hydrolysis mechanism and identified the resulting products. Interestingly, one specific hydrolysis product, a monophosphite-monophosphonate structure, was found to contribute significantly to color and melt flow stabilization during polymer processing.

Antioxidant 24 [bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) pentaerythritol diphosphite] is a widely used stabilizer in polymer systems such as polyolefins, polycarbonates, and polyamens. This work evaluated pentaerythritol-based phosphites as bulk additives to accelerate hydrolytic degradation of polylactide (PLA) and how formulation with acid scavengers permits control of processing stability and post-use hydrolysis.
Experimental Approach: Commercial PLA was compounded with selected phosphites (P1 = distearyl pentaerythritol diphosphite; P2 = Antioxidant 24; P3 = bis(2,4-dicumylphenyl) pentaerythritol diphosphite) using a twin-screw extruder. Blends with and without acid scavengers were prepared. Hydrolytic aging was performed in deionised water at 23 °C, 35 °C and 58 °C. Hydrolysis progress was monitored by melt volume rate (MVR) and SEC (number-average molecular weight).
Key Findings
· The alkyl-substituted phosphite P1 exhibited the highest reactivity and produced the greatest acceleration of PLA molecular-weight loss. The highly hindered aromatic phosphite P3 showed minimal effect on processing stability. P2 (Antioxidant 24) displayed intermediate behaviour - it increases hydrolysis rate relative to P3 but is less aggressive than P1, making it suitable where moderate acceleration is desired without excessive loss of processing robustness.
· Combining P2 with an acid scavenger provided a practical way to balance processing stability and post-use accelerated hydrolysis. The scavenger acts during processing to neutralize acidic species and moderates the autocatalytic hydrolysis cascade thereafter.
