This case study highlights the experimental application of alloocimene as a functional glassy end-block in the synthesis of novel polyisobutylene (PIB)-alloocimene-PIB triblock copolymers. Alloocimene and isobutylene were sequentially polymerized to construct a well-defined triblock architecture with a high-molecular-weight PIB mid-block and alloocimene terminal blocks. Molecular characteristics were confirmed by ^1H NMR, which quantified an alloocimene content of 25.5 wt%, and by gel permeation analysis, yielding a number-average molecular weight of 260 kg/mol. Dynamic mechanical analysis using parallel-plate and cone-and-plate rheometry revealed significant reinforcement at ambient temperature due to phase-separated glassy alloocimene domains. Temperature-dependent atomic force microscopy, performed under controlled heating, directly visualized morphology evolution across the alloocimene glass transition. Complementary TEM of cryo-microtomed, OsO₄-stained films further confirmed domain structure. Collectively, these experimental methods demonstrate alloocimene's critical role in enabling processable, thermoplastic elastomer networks based on otherwise non-crosslinkable PIB.
