Ultrasonic-Assisted Green Synthesis Of 2-Ethylhexyl Stearate

Effect of temperature on conversion of stearic acid in ultrasound assisted enzymatic synthesis of 2-ethylhexyl stearate Gawas, Sarita D., and Virendra K. Rathod. Journal of Oleo Science 69.9 (2020): 1043-1049.

2-Ethylhexyl stearate is used as a biolubricant in a variety of cosmetics. Fermase CALB 10000 catalyzed the biocatalytic esterification of 2-ethylhexanol and stearic acid to form 2-ethylhexyl stearate under ultrasonic treatment. The maximum conversion (95.87%) was obtained in a relatively short time when the molar ratio of 2-ethylhexanol to stearic acid was 2:1, the enzyme amount was 2% (w/w), the power was 80W, the duty cycle was 50%, and the temperature was 50°C. In the case of Fermase as a catalyst, the reaction time (3 hours) was 1.5 hours. Under the optimal conditions, it was observed that in the presence of ultrasound; the reaction time was reduced to 4 hours compared to the mechanical stirring method (7 hours). The physicochemical properties of 2-ethylhexyl palmitate were also evaluated.
Ultrasonic-assisted esterification of 2-ethylhexyl stearate was carried out in an ultrasonic constant temperature water bath with Fermase as the catalyst. The reaction was carried out in a 50 mL glass reactor with a flat bottom. The reaction system is heterogeneous in nature; therefore, an overhead stirrer was used to mix the reaction mixture. Ultrasonic irradiation of the reaction mixture was initiated under stirring, with reaction samples being taken out at regular intervals. The progress of the reaction was evaluated by titrating the reaction sample with 0.05N KOH solution to determine the amount of unconverted stearic acid based on the acid value of the mixture. The reaction was carried out until equilibrium conditions were reached.
