Pigment-based inkjet technology demands exceptional pigment dispersity and stability in solvent systems. This case study explores the development of PY-150ASA2, a novel synergist synthesized from Pigment Yellow 150 (PY-150).
Synthesis: PY-150 (0.5 g, 1.77 mmol) and sodium tert-butoxide (0.68 g, 3.54 mmol) were dissolved in DMF and stirred at 80°C for 15 minutes. 1,4-Butane sultone was added, and the reaction continued for 15 hours. The mixture was quenched with deionized water, stirred for 30 minutes at room temperature, and filtered to isolate PY-150ASA2 as a yellow solid.
Performance Testing: Dispersions containing PY-150ASA2 or commercial synergist (control) underwent cyclic storage stability testing (-22°C to 55°C). Particle size was measured initially and after thermal stress.
Key Findings
· PY-150ASA2 demonstrated significantly improved solubility and dispersion stability in water compared to unmodified PY-150.
· While PY-150ASA2 exhibited a slightly larger initial particle size (+3 nm) than commercial synergist, it demonstrated markedly better stability under thermal stress. After one day at 55°C, PY-150ASA2 maintained superior dispersion quality relative to the commercial synergist.
· Effective Dispersion: PY-150ASA2 effectively dispersed within the pigment matrix, achieving smaller particle sizes than the control post-thermal aging.
