Measurement Method for Glufosinate and Its Metabolite 3-Methylphosphinico-Propionic Acid

An analytical method was established for quantifying glufosinate and its derivatives, 3-methylphosphinico-propionic acid (MPP) and 2-methylphosphonoacetic acid (MPA), in field soil samples. Standard solutions of glufosinate, MPP and MPA were made in methanol (1.0 g L-1). Work standard solutions for calibration were dilute with methanol to 0.05 to 5.0 mg L-1.
Analytical method
· First, glufosinate, MPP, and MPA in soil were extracted with 5% (v/v) ammonium hydroxide solution.
· Glufosinate, MPP, and MPA were derivatized by treatment with TMOA in the presence of acetic acid. After treatment with TMOA and acetic acid, the hydroxyl and amino groups of glufosinate, MPP, and MPA were acetylated, and the carboxyl groups were converted to methyl esters. The optimal temperature and time for the derivatization reaction were 95 °C and 90 min, respectively.
· MPA, MPP, and glufosinate derivatives were analyzed by GC-FPD, and the results showed good response and separation. Figure 4 shows a representative example of the gas chromatogram of the derivative compounds, each injected at a concentration of 1.0 mg L-1.
· This method is environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and easy to operate. The results show that the method used to extract and quantify glufosinate, MPP, and MPA residues is qualitatively and quantitatively accurate.
