Sodium acetate is a hygroscopic powder that is very soluble in water. Sodium acetate is used as an additive in food, industry, concrete manufacturing, heating pads and buffer solutions.

Due to its porosity and permeability, concrete is easily damaged and deteriorated by water and chemical penetration. Therefore, how to reduce the porosity and permeability and provide effective waterproof protection for concrete has become a key issue to ensure the durability of concrete. This study introduces a new technique of sodium acetate as a permeability reducer for concrete surface treatment. The effect of sodium acetate on the permeable properties of concrete was investigated experimentally, involving three concrete grades and five different sodium acetate dosages.

Research Highlights

> For low-strength concrete (fc' = 30 MPa), the addition of sodium acetate (> 3%) can significantly reduce its permeability.

> For high-strength concrete (fc' = 50 MPa), the addition of sodium acetate (> 3%) caused a jump in penetration depth, showing an adverse effect on high-strength concrete permeability.

> Scanning Electron Microscopy test results confirmed crystal growth within concrete pores, which will clog concrete pores by filling and plugging capillaries, micro-cracks and other voids.

> The crystals formed due to the combination of cement, water and sodium acetate can fill the concrete voids, which undoubtedly improves the durability and service life of the concrete structure.
