Preparation of Temperature-Sensitive Nonionic Vesicles from Span 80

Different types of non-ionic vesicles can be prepared using Span 80 (also known as sorbitan monooleate) as a cheap, biocompatible alternative to traditional phospholipid vesicles (liposomes).
Preparation of Span 80 Vesicles
· Generally speaking, the reported hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) number of Span 80 is 4.3, too low to form stable bilayers, i.e. Span 80 is too hydrophobic for vesicle formation. A particular two-step emulsification method is applied to form stable Span 80-based vesicles.
· This method is a procedure that involves a partial purification of commercial Span 80, resulting in an enrichment of the diester fraction. Span 80-based vesicles prepared by this particular method have already been tested as promising drug delivery system in vitro and in vivo.

Using span 80 and D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) as osmotic regulators and chitosan as the polymer, a span 80/TPGS-modified acyclovir (ACR)-loaded lipid-coated chitosan nanocomplexes (LCNCs) was successfully prepared . The LCNCs complex improves the poor skin permeability of ACR, thereby promoting the dermal delivery of ACR and improving the therapeutic effect.
Span 80/TPGS modified lipid formulation
· Three formulation variables were explored, including the amount of chitosan (A), the amount of glyceryl monooleate (GMO) (B), span 80: TPGS ratio (C).
· The optimal formulation (LCNCs 8) was formulated with 600 mg chitosan, 120 mg GMO and a 3:1 Span 80: · TPGS ratio. In this formulation, PS is 177.50 ± 1.41 nm, PDI value is 0.28 ± 0.02, ZP is -10.70 ± 0.85 mV, EE% is 77.20 ± 2.40%, and ACR release can be maintained for more than 24 hours.

Span 80 and Tween 80 Used as Additives in Mixed Fuels

Span 80 and Tween 80 are biodegradable surfactants that can be added to fuel blends to improve the fuel's water resistance and reduce its corrosiveness without changing its fuel properties. The Span 80/Tween 80 surfactant blends have been proven to improve four fuel blends, including: DN ethanol and commercial unleaded gasoline 92 (E10); DN ethanol, straight-run naphtha, and unleaded gasoline 92 (E20); commercial unleaded gasoline 80 and DN ethanol (E25); methanol and gasoline 92 (M9).
Best HLB Test for Span 80/Tween 80
· A blend was prepared containing 50 ml of gasoline 95, 50 ml of hydrated bioethanol, 3 ml of methanol and 10 ml of surfactant.
· The mixture is then titrated with distilled water until the point of phase separation (i.e. water is no longer dissolved in the mixture).
· The hydrophile:lipophile balance (HLB) value for Span 80 and Tween 80 surfactant mixtures was calculated using Eq. The optimal HLB values were subsequently used for testing of DN ethanol/methanol-gasoline blends.
