Production Methods and Processes of Cadmium Stearate

Cadmium stearate is also called cadmium octadecanoate. Insoluble in water, soluble in hot ethanol, heated and dissolved in organic solvents and turned into a gel after cooling. Cadmium stearate decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding cadmium salt when exposed to strong acid. It absorbs water in the air.

Production Method of Cadmium Stearate

After saponification of stearic acid and liquid alkali, sodium stearate is obtained, and then a metathesis reaction occurs with cadmium sulfate, and the product is obtained after treatment.

Production Process

Put 117 kg of 30% sodium hydroxide into the reaction pot, add water to form a solution, gradually add 246 kg of pre-melted stearic acid, keep the temperature at 80-85 °C, and stir to carry out saponification reaction. After the saponification is completed, add an appropriate amount of cold water to lower the temperature of the material to about 40 °C. Slowly add the prepared cadmium sulfate solution while stirring, and keep stirring for 1.5 hours until the product precipitates completely. After static delamination, the precipitation was separated, washed with water in the washing tank without sulfate ion, centrifuged and dehydrated, and cadmium stearate was obtained by drying at 90 °C.

Add stearic acid and sodium hydroxide into the reaction bottle, heat with stirring to perform saponification reaction, and generate stearic acid sodium salt. Metal cadmium is added to sulfuric acid and nitric acid, dissolved to obtain cadmium sulfate, and the stearic acid sodium salt prepared above is added to carry out metathesis reaction. The reaction produces cadmium stearate precipitate. The product is washed with water, centrifuged, dehydrated and dried to obtain cadmium stearate.

Cadmium Stearate Uses

Cadmium stearate is a light-resistant and transparent stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, a lubricant and a transparent softener for rubber product films. It is the variety with the smallest initial coloration, best light stability and transparency among soap stabilizers. It is usually combined with barium soap, barium-zinc soap or barium-lead soap. If combined with phosphite, the heat resistance and weather resistance can be further improved. In hard products, it can be combined with lead soap to improve processability. It has excellent synergy when used together with barium salts, organotin stabilizers, epoxy compounds and phosphites. Cadmium stearate is mainly used in soft and transparent products, such as film, sheet, hose and artificial leather, etc., and is not suitable for products in contact with food.

Cadmium Stearate Safety, Storage, and Transportation

Caustic soda and cadmium salt are used in production, and operators should wear labor protection equipment. This product is toxic, please pay attention to safety protection during production and use.
