Understanding the speciation and stability of metal complexes with hydroxocarboxylic acids is essential for predicting metal ion behavior in biological and environmental systems. a comprehensive potentiometric investigation of the interaction between zinc(II) ions and three important hydroxocarboxylic ligands: malate, tartrate, and citrate. The study determined the stability constants of mono- and polynuclear Zn(II)-ligand species across different ionic media (NaCl and NaNO3) and ionic strengths.
Experimental Protocol: Potentiometric titrations were performed at T=298.15 K in aqueous NaCl and NaNO3 media at ionic strengths of 0.15 and 1.00 mol/dm3. The formation constants of Zn(II)-hydroxocarboxylate complexes were determined by analyzing the potentiometric data using nonlinear least-squares refinement programs. Mixed metal systems were studied by titrating solutions containing both Zn2+ and Sn2+ with the ligands. Speciation diagrams were constructed as a function of pH. The sequestering ability of the ligands toward Zn2+ was quantified using the empirical parameter pL0.5, which represents the total ligand concentration required to sequester 50% of the metal ion.
Performance Evaluation: The stability constants determined in NaCl media were significantly higher than those in NaNO3, attributed to the formation of ion pairs with chloride ions. For the hetero-metal Zn2+/Sn2+/malate/chloride system, quaternary species formation constants were determined: log K=0.48 for ZnSnMalaCl, log K=0.36 for ZnSn(Mala)2Cl, and log K=0.82 for ZnSn(Mala)2OHCl. The formation of hetero-metal complexes produced enhanced stability compared to homo-metal complexes, significantly shifting the pH of precipitation of sparingly soluble species and increasing metal mobility and bioavailability. The pL0.5 analysis provided quantitative assessment of ligand sequestering capacity under different experimental conditions.
