Tetronic 701 for the Immobilization of α-Amylase in Polyethersulfone Membrane Antifouling Applications
This case study reports the experimental application of Tetronic 701 as a polymeric surfactant for α-amylase immobilization to enhance the antifouling performance of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. Tetronic 701 micelles were prepared as 0.01 wt% aqueous solutions and disrupted by 30 min sonication prior to enzyme loading. α-Amylase was then added to a final concentration of 1 mg/mL, followed by 24 h equilibration to allow micelle reformation and enzyme entrapment. The resulting enzyme-loaded micelles exhibited an average diameter of approximately 400 nm and optimal activity at pH 6.5-7.5. Membrane modification was achieved via physical adsorption by immersing pre-cleaned PES membranes in the micellar solution for 1 h, followed by rinsing with deionized water. The immobilized α-amylase demonstrated a 1.5-1.8-fold increase in activity, enabled starch conversion efficiencies of 80-90%, and maintained stable biocatalytic performance over five regeneration cycles, confirming the effectiveness of Tetronic 701 in enzyme-assisted antifouling membrane design.
