Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate Used for Cross-Linking to Prepare Guar Gum Gel Materials

Sun C, et al. Cellulose, 2016, 23(5), 3013-3022.

Guar gum (GG) fracturing fluids were studied by incorporating cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) into borax cross-linked guar gum gel. Borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate) crosslinked guar gum (GG) gel was prepared in deionized water and was employed as the base fluid. The GG gels crosslinked by borax and containing CNF achieved better static and dynamic proppant suspending capacities at the same time as borate-crosslinked GG gels did.
Preparation of borax cross-linked GG gel
· The GG gels were prepared by stirring mixtures of 2.5 g/l guar gum with 2.5 g/l anhydrous borax and adding various concentrations of CNF.
· Before adding borax solution to the GG solution, CNF was dispersed in the GG solution first.
· All mixtures were stirred by a overheard stirrer for about 4 min at 400 rpm. The concentrations of borax and GG in solution before formulating gels were 2.5 g/l.
