Application
Sodium oxalate serves as a key component in various industrial and laboratory applications. Primarily known for its role in standardizing potassium permanganate solutions, sodium oxalate, or disodium oxalate, is a white, crystalline, and odorless powder with the chemical formula Na2C2O4. When used in titrations, it is essential that the reaction mixture's temperature exceeds 60 °C to facilitate complete and rapid interaction of permanganate, with the overall reaction involving sodium oxalate, permanganate, and sulfuric acid resulting in potassium sulfate, manganese sulfate, carbon dioxide, and water. This compound also finds utility in the finishing of textiles and leather due to its chemical properties. As an organic sodium salt, sodium oxalate is soluble in water but remains insoluble in alcohol, and it can act as a reducing agent, offering utility in various reaction processes.
