6-Phenyldodecane, an alkylbenzene hydrocarbon, was identified as a major constituent (11.26%) in the unsaponifiable matter of Plantago ovata seed fixed oil. Together with other bioactive compounds (fatty acids, sterols, triterpenoids), it contributes to the oil's antioxidant and hepatorenal protective activity against ketoprofen-induced toxicity.
Isolation and Identification: P. ovata seeds were defatted with petroleum ether. The saponifiable and unsaponifiable fractions were analyzed by GC/MS. Column chromatography and preparative TLC isolated five steroidal compounds (β-sitosterol, lupeol, stigmasterol, campesterol, 24(25)-dihydrocycloartenol). 6-Phenyldodecane was identified by comparison of its mass spectral fragmentation with library data.
Performance Evaluation: In the unsaponifiable matter, 6-phenyldodecane (11.26%) and 6-phenyltridecane (11.12%) were the major compounds. The fixed oil (2 mL/kg) administered to ketoprofen-intoxicated rats (8 mg/kg, 7 days) significantly reduced oxidative stress: SOD and GSH increased by 56% and 82%, while MDA decreased by 44% compared to untreated ketoprofen group. Liver enzymes (AST, ALT, ALP) improved by 120%, 94%, and 24%, respectively. Urea and creatinine decreased by 103% and 110%; total protein increased by 13%. Histopathology showed preserved renal and hepatic architecture. DNA fragmentation was markedly reduced.
Conclusion: 6-Phenyldodecane, as a major hydrocarbon in P. ovata seed oil, is part of a bioactive complex that effectively ameliorates ketoprofen-induced hepatorenal toxicity, likely through synergistic antioxidant and membrane-stabilizing mechanisms.

6-Phenyldodecane, an alkylbenzene hydrocarbon, was identified as a major volatile component in the n-hexane extracts of four umbelliferous vegetables-parsley, dill, celery, and coriander. Its abundance varies among species, contributing to the distinctive chemical profiles and potential antibacterial activity of these culinary plants.
Extraction and Identification: Dried leaves of parsley, dill, celery, and coriander were extracted with n-hexane by cold sonication. The volatile profiles were analyzed by GC-MS (RTX-5MS column, 50-300 °C temperature program). Compounds were identified by comparison of mass spectra with NIST and Wiley libraries and retention indices against n-alkanes. Multivariate data analysis (PCA, HCA) was applied for sample discrimination.
Performance Evaluation: 6-Phenyldodecane was detected in all four vegetables, with the highest relative abundance in parsley (6.75%) and dill (5.83%), followed by celery (0.37%) and coriander (0.18%). Aromatic hydrocarbons constituted the major volatile class in all samples (47.8-64.0%). PCA loading plots revealed that 6-phenyldodecane, along with other phenyldodecane isomers, was enriched in dill, accounting for its distinct clustering. The n-hexane extracts showed moderate to strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., S. aureus inhibition zones 11.2-20.3 mm) and Gram-negative E. cloacae (9.5-17.2 mm), with celery and dill exhibiting the highest potency.
Conclusion: 6-Phenyldodecane is a signature volatile hydrocarbon in umbelliferous vegetables, contributing to their chemical heterogeneity and potential antibacterial properties, supporting their use as functional foods.
