Researchers produced oligosiloxanes with mesogenic groups using hydrosilylation catalyzed by Karstedt's catalyst. These utilized cores with distinct structures: tetrakis(dimethylsiloxy)silane (A, cross), 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (B, cubic), tetraphenyltetrahydroxycyclotetrasiloxane (C, cyclic, bulky phenyl), tetrakis(dimethylsilyl)octaphenylsilsesquioxane (D, double-decker), and hydride Q resin (E, branched) with distinct core structures. The researchers used mesogenic derivatives including 4-allyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (M1) and cholesteryl-10-undecenoate (M2) in their experiments. The investigation of phase behaviors in structurally diverse oligomers showed that nearly all compounds demonstrated liquid crystalline properties over a wide temperature spectrum.
Synthesis of Mesogenic Oligomers (Example: CM1):
Compound C (0.51 g, 0.65 mmol) and M1 (0.75 g, 3.19 mmol) were mixed under dry nitrogen. Toluene (15 ml) and Pt-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane catalyst (10 μl) were added, followed by stirring for 1 h. The solution was evaporated to dryness. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (Wako Gel C-300, eluted sequentially with toluene and chloroform) and reprecipitated in methanol. Product purity (CM1: 1,3,5,7-tetraphenyl-1,3,5,7-tetrakis(dimethylsiloxy)cyclotetrasiloxane with M1) was confirmed by HPLC. Yield = 46%.
Synthesis of EM1:
EM1 (Hydride Q resin with M1) was synthesized similarly. Purification employed the same column chromatography and methanol reprecipitation. Yield = 39%.
