• Description: Dinotefuran is an insecticide of the neonicotinoid class developed by Mitsui Chemicals for control of insect pests such as aphids, whiteflies, thrips, leafhoppers, leafminers, sawflies, mole cricket, white grubs, lacebugs, billbugs, beetles, mealybugs, and cockroaches on leafy vegetables, in residential and commercial buildings, and for professional turf management. Its mechanism of action involves disruption of the insect’s nervous system by inhibiting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. In order to avoid harming beneficial insects such as bees, it should not be applied during bloom. ; In July of 2013, the state of Oregon temporarily restricted the use of dinotefuran pending the results of an investigation into a large bee kill.Dinotefuran is also used in veterinary medicine as a flea and tick preventative for dogs and as a flea preventative for cats. It is used in combination with pyriproxifen or permethrin.

In order to reduce the potential threat to bee populations caused by exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides (such as dinotefuran), studies have proposed strategies to reduce the potential ecotoxicity of the neonicotinoid dinotefuran to bees from the enantiomeric level. Dinotefuran is composed of a pair of enantiomers S-dinotefuran and R-dinotefuran. Research shows that R-dinotefuran significantly reduces ecotoxicity to non-target bees and maintains efficacy comparable to target pests. Furthermore, R-dinotefuran is more easily degraded in soil than its enantiomer.
Preparation and identification of chiral dinotefuran
· Dinotefuran enantiomers were separated and prepared using a supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) system.
· Enantiomeric resolution, retention time, and peak area were calculated for dinotefuran enantiomers using the SFC method station.
