MOF materials based on Zr(IV) and 2,5-Dimercaptoterephthalic Acid Enable High-Performance Mercury Capture and Detection

Schematic diagram of the process and application of preparing MOF materials with Zr and 2,5-dimercaptoterephthalic acid. Yang, Hanlun, et al. Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical 320 (2020): 128447.

In this case, mercaptan-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized through the coordination of Zr(IV) ions with 2,5-dimercaptoterephthalic acid (Zr-DMBD MOFs) and then combined with three-dimensional carbon derived from kenaf stems (3D-KSC) to create a novel nanocomposite for the removal and electrochemical detection of Hg(II).
Synthesis of the Nanocomposite Using H2DMBD
0.06 mmol of ZrCl4 (0.0140 g) and 2,5-dimercaptoterephthalic acid (H2DMBD, 0.0138 g) were dissolved in 2 mL of nitrogen-saturated DMF using ultrasonic agitation. The 3D-KSC was then immersed in this solution, followed by placing the reactor in a preheated oven at 130 °C for 36 hours. The nitrogen atmosphere effectively limited the oxidation of the mercaptan groups. The resulting solid product was washed and air-dried at 60 °C for 12 hours, yielding the Zr-DMBD MOFs/3D-KSC composite.
Key Results
The sensitivity towards Hg(II) was 324.58 μA μM-1 cm-2, with a linear range of 0.25-3.5 μM and a limit of detection of 0.05 μM. The outstanding results were mainly related to the homogeneous dispersion of Zr-DMBD MOFs on the 3D-KSC and the presence of plentiful mercaptan groups in the porous Zr-DMBD MOFs that would remarkably improve Hg(II) enrichment on the electrode. Furthermore, the Zr-DMBD MOFs/3D-KSC possessed excellent stability and reproducibility and effectively removed Hg(II) from real wastewater samples.

2,5-Dimercaptoterephthalic Acid Functionalized Uio-66 Type Framework for Antibacterial Nano Zr MOF

Nano Zr MOF prepared by 2,5-dimercaptoterephthalic acid is used for antibacterial therapy. Xie, Bao-Xuan, et al. Inorganic Chemistry 62.34 (2023): 13892-13901.

2,5-Dimercaptoterephthalic acid (H2DMBD) was integrated into a UiO-66-type framework alongside porphyrin dopant TCPP via a mix-and-match self-assembly strategy, forming the functionalized MOF designated as UiO-66-(SH)2@TCPP. The thiol (-SH) groups of H2DMBD facilitated subsequent silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) encapsulation through Ag(I) impregnation and in situ UV light reduction, yielding the final composite UiO-66-(SH)2@TCPP@AgNPs.
Key Findings
· ROS Amplification: Ag NPs and TCPP synergistically enhanced visible light absorption, significantly boosting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency.
· Bacterial Targeting: Nanoscale dimensions enabled direct bacterial contact and cellular internalization.
· Ag NP Stabilization: High-density thiol moieties from H2DMBD firmly anchored Ag NPs within the framework, preventing cytotoxic leakage.
· The composite demonstrated high aPDT efficacy against Gram-negative/Gram-positive bacteria and MRSA, maintained excellent biocompatibility in vitro, and showed potential cell proliferation promotion.
