The combination of hydrogen peroxide and a small quantity of methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) in ionic liquids enables an efficient synthesis process for producing nitrones that serve as precursors for various heterocyclic compounds. This research investigated the hydrogen peroxide oxidation of secondary amines using various ionic liquids including 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methylcarbonate ([bmim]MeOCO2) with both traditional stirring methods and ultrasonic irradiation techniques.
Typical Procedure for Synthesizing Nitrones
A solution of MTO (30 mg, 0.12 mmol) in 30% H2O2 (4 mL) was mixed with a stirred solution of the amine (3.5 mmol) in an ionic liquid (3 mL), and the reaction was conducted in an air atmosphere. Sonochemical experiments were carried out in an ultrasonic cleaning bath operating at 20 kHz. The mixture underwent extraction with t-Butyl methyl ether (tBuOMe) then the organic layer was separated and dried using anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4). The drying agent was removed by filtration, followed by evaporation of the solvent.
Key Findings Regarding [bmim]MeOCO2
Notable outcomes were observed when using [bmim]MeOCO2 and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim]PF6). Reactions conducted in these ionic liquids yielded pure nitrone II at acceptable rates. The reaction in [bmim]MeOCO2 achieved a high yield of 73%, with nitrone II being the sole product in the first cycle. However, in subsequent cycles (second, third, and fourth), hydroxylamine III emerged as the predominant product, while the yields of nitrone II dropped below 20% across all cycles.
