What is HDPE?

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a semi-crystalline, non-polar thermoplastic available in white granular or powder form. Its high strength-to-density ratio, good chemical resistance, and dimensional stability make it widely used in packaging, pipes, containers, and various R&D applications. Typical bulk density and thermal data (for reference only) include a density of approximately 930–970 kg·m-3 and a melting point of approximately 131–132°C—properties that make HDPE suitable for extrusion, molding, and some prototyping processes.

Curious About Our Success Stories?

Alfa Chemistry is proud to show you successful application examples of our PMMA powders.

Case A: University polymer composites lab (academic R&D)

Need: small-lot, narrow particle-size HDPE microspheres (20–60 µm) to study filler dispersion in thermoplastic matrices.

Solution from Alfa Chemistry: supplied 3 × 250 g trial lots with tight D10–D90 control, accompanied by SEM images and suggested dispersion protocol.

Outcome: enabled repeatable dispersion tests; the lab reported clearer microstructure images and faster iteration on composite formulations. (Confidential academic client.)

Case B: Small medical-device prototype house

Needed: food-contact/biocompatibility-friendly HDPE granules for external housings; quantity: 5 kg small batch.

Solution: supplied low-MFI HDPE granules with traceable batch certificates and recommended molding parameters.

Outcome: The first-pass prototype run succeeded with an acceptable surface finish; the client advanced to a pilot run with a 50–100 kg order.

Case C: Coatings R&D (industrial SME)

Needed: HDPE powder as a low-density filler to tune abrasion resistance in a specialty coating; small samples were required for screening.

Solution: delivered three powder grades (10 µm, 50 µm, 150 µm) in 100–500 g sample packs and advised on dispersion solvents/temperatures.

Outcome: the 50 µm grade provided target abrasion improvement while maintaining coating clarity.

Case D: 3D filament startup (prototype extrusion trials)

Needed: trial-scale granules for extrusion of HDPE-based filament (pilot 10 kg).

Solution: supplied stabilized HDPE granules and support on drying and extrusion profiles.

Outcome: The startup produced consistent filament diameter after 2 iteration cycles and placed repeat orders.

FAQs About Our PP Products

What distinguishes HDPE granules from HDPE powder?

Granules are optimized for melt processing (extrusion, injection, rotomolding); powders and micro-beads are used when fine dispersion, surface modification, or dry blending is required. Choose powders for coating fillers and granules for melt flow applications.

Do you supply small sample sizes (≤1 kg)?

Yes. Alfa Chemistry supports small R&D quantities and sample kits (grams to single-kilogram packs) with accompanying QC documentation.

Are food-grade or medical/biocompatible HDPE grades available?

Food-contact and medical-compatible HDPE formulations exist; certification depends on grade and country regulations. For medical or food use, request certificates of compliance, test reports and statements of conformity prior to purchase.

How should HDPE be stored before processing?

Keep original packaging sealed; store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from sunlight and ignition sources; allow powders to equilibrate to room temperature before processing.

Can you provide custom particle size distributions or surface-treated beads?

Yes. Alfa Chemistry offers custom milling, sieving and surface treatment services for research lots (subject to MOQ and lead time).

Which analytical tests do you recommend for incoming QC?

Recommended baseline: MFI (melt flow), DSC (melting/crystallinity), density, tensile test, FTIR for identity, and moisture/ash. For powders, particle size distribution and SEM imaging are often useful.

Typical lead time and MOQ for custom small batches?

Standard sample packs: days to 1 week; small custom lots (≤50 kg) typically 1–3 weeks depending on specification and post-processing. Contact sales for exact lead time on bespoke tasks.
