Specification
The volatile substance heptadecane which originates from Spirulina platensis acts as an inhibitor of new fatty acid production while also providing relief from multiple oxidative stress-related diseases. The research examined how heptadecane suppresses inflammatory NF-kB activation via redox-related NIK/IKK and MAPKs pathways in old rats.
· Research Methods
The study administered heptadecane at dosages of 20 or 40 mg/kg body weight to Fischer 344 rats that were 9 and 20 months old over a course of 10 days. It evaluated heptadecane's efficiency by analyzing its effects on the expression of COX-2 and iNOS genes tied to NF-κB and the generation of reactive species within old kidney tissue. YPEN-1 cell line (endothelial cells) served as a model to explore how heptadecane affects anti-inflammatory effects through NF-kB signaling pathway modulation.
· Research Results
Heptadecane showed substantial antioxidant defensive effects for YPEN-1 cells when they were exposed to oxidative stress caused by tert-butylhydroperoxide. And molecular research showed that heptadecane diminished NF-kB activation triggered by RS through both NIK/IKK and MAPKs pathways in YPEN-1 cells and aged kidney tissues. That is, heptadecane suppresses age-related increases in pro-inflammatory gene expression by diminishing NF-kB activity alongside boosting the NIK/IKK and MAPKs pathways which respond to reactive species.
In this work, a polystyrene (PS)/n-heptadecane micro/nanocapsule was prepared as a novel encapsulated phase change material (EPCM) and its good potential for latent heat energy storage (LHTES) was verified, which is suitable for passive solar thermal regulation in textiles, construction and electronic materials.
PS/n-heptadecane micro/nano-capsule synthesis
To prepare PS/n-heptadecane (2:1) capsules, 6.7 g styrene, 2 g divinylbenzene (cross-linker), and 40 mL deionized water were mixed in a three-neck reactor. Melted n-heptadecane (3.3 g) was added, homogenized at 12,000 rpm (15 min), followed by adding 3 g Triton X-100 and re-homogenizing at 50°C (60 min, 12,000 rpm). A freshly prepared initiator (0.15 g FeSO4·7H2O + 0.1 g (NH4)2S2O8 in 100 mL H2O; 1 mL used) was introduced. The mixture was stirred at 70°C (500 rpm, 6 h) to form an oil-in-water emulsion. Polymerization ceased at honey-like consistency. The product was filtered, washed, and dried at 40°C. Similar steps were applied for 1:1 (50% styrene/50% n-heptadecane) and 1:2 (33% styrene/67% n-heptadecane) ratios.
