Azides
Azides are a class of compounds containing three nitrogen atoms as a group, represented as (-N3) (Scheme 1), which are considered as the conjugate base of hydrazoic acid HN3. Like halogen compounds, azides react rapidly with other substances by displacement of the azide group and give rise to a variety of compounds. In general, azides are divided into inorganic azides, organic azides and acyl azides. Of these, organic azides have intrigued chemists ever since their discovery by Peter Griess in 1864 and are probably among the most versatile and fascinating compounds in organic synthesis. Currently, organic azides are being used as important reaction reagents for copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC) click reactions.
