Ilmenite is the most important ore source in titanium industrial production. To improve the recovery of ilmenite, various surface modification techniques have been investigated, such as the use of high-efficiency collectors and pretreatment or surface modification. Surface modification is a useful tool to tune properties such as biocompatibility, wettability, and adhesion. The use of selective activators in flotation can significantly improve the difference in floatability between valuable and gangue minerals. Adding active components on the surface of ilmenite is a relatively common activation method at present, and adding active components can increase the number of active sites on the surface of ilmenite.

Sodium hypochlorite is a common oxidizing agent. This study proposes the use of sodium hypochlorite as an oxidant and surfactant to convert Fe2+ on the ilmenite surface to Fe3+ in solution, which is a relatively economical technique. The research results show that sodium hypochlorite can activate ilmenite and improve its flotation performance.

Research Highlights

> Sodium hypochlorite is used as oxidant and surface modifier to facilitate ilmenite flotation.

> Sodium hypochlorite successfully carried out the valence transition of iron atoms on the surface of ilmenite, thereby enhancing the interaction activity between the surface sites of ilmenite and sodium oleate, and finally improving the flotation recovery rate of ilmenite.

> Zeta potential measurements showed that sodium hypochlorite made the zeta potential of the ilmenite-sodium oleate system more negative, which was mainly due to the enhanced adsorption between them.

> Sodium hypochlorite oxidation increases Fe3+ on the surface of ilmenite by 21.64%, and the recovery rate of ilmenite increases to 95%.
